On Friday, 12 December 2025, at 4:00 PM, within the park of the Special Hospital for Orthopedics and Rehabilitation “Martin Horvat” Rovinj-Rovigno, the ceremonial inauguration of a new sculpture with a light installation entitled "Day and Night" took place. From this moment on, the artwork becomes part of the cultural and visual identity of the city. The project was initiated a year ago by the author of the sculpture, Dean Jokanović-Toumin, who donated his original work to the Special Hospital for Orthopedics and Rehabilitation “Martin Horvat” Rovinj-Rovigno and to the City of Rovinj-Rovigno.

Dean Jokanović-Toumin is a contemporary Croatian artist and sculptor. He was born in Sarajevo in 1946 and received his artistic education in Zagreb, where he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in the late 1960s. In the early 1970s, he began his international career, particularly in Italy, developing an artistic expression marked by a strong sense of space and installation. Throughout his artistic life, he has been involved in numerous significant thematic projects by Croatian and international authors. He has received multiple awards for his work and is the recipient of several important prizes. His work has been presented worldwide, further confirming the value and richness of his artistic output. His activities since 1970 culminated in the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts Award for Outstanding Achievements in the Arts for the project of the same name, presented at the Meštrović Pavilion in Zagreb in 2006. From 2008 to 2019, he worked as a professor at the Arts Academy in Split, in the Department of Painting. Over the past decades, he has participated in exhibitions around the world and realized artistic projects under the auspices of prestigious international art institutions, such as the Venice Biennale, the São Paulo Biennale, the Valencia Biennale, the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art – Snug Harbor Cultural Center (New York), the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona, the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig in Vienna, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Haifa Museum of Art, Ars Aevi – Museum of Contemporary Art and Collegium Artisticum in Sarajevo, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de Saint-Étienne Métropole. He has taken part in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Croatia and abroad (Zagreb, Milan, New York, Cardiff, Ljubljana, Barcelona, etc.). His works are held in many eminent museums and important private collections.

The sculpture with its light installation was realized by the Rovinj-Rovigno Tourist Board and the City of Rovinj-Rovigno, with financial support from the Croatian National Tourist Board. The sculpture is located within the hospital grounds and is accessible to all citizens and visitors, representing more than just an art object—it is a new landmark and a place to enjoy art, as well as confirmation that Rovinj continuously develops its visual and cultural identity.

In addition to Dean Jokanović-Toumin, the realization of this project involved the project team Public Design d.o.o. from Zagreb; the construction contractor Miramare d.o.o. from Rovinj; the company Lab4D from Rovinj, responsible for installing the light installation; the project supervision company Dujmović Inženjering d.o.o. from Rovinj; and the company Idea Futura from Pazin.

Through the realization of this sculpture, the author Dean Jokanović-Toumin presents the city and the hospital with a work that will undoubtedly become an integral part of Rovinj’s visual identity, enriching the city’s cultural offerings and tourist appeal. The sculpture "Day and Night" symbolically reminds us that both light and shadow are part of the same path, that life continually goes on, and that after difficult periods, a new beginning always follows. Such a message fits perfectly within the context of a rehabilitation hospital, offering hope for recovery, healing, and the improvement of both body and spirit.
