2. Avantgarde Jazz Festival: The Bad Plus
Undoubtedly one of the greatest jazz success stories in the past decade
Undoubtedly one of the greatest jazz success stories in the past decade, The Bad Plus (Reid Anderson – bass; Ethan Iverson – piano, and David King - drums) has surpassed the boundaries of jazz music. The band is constantly on tours, playing and creating a diverse and ecstatic hybrid audience in jazz clubs, symphony halls and at rock concerts (they have opened for The Pixies, Wilco, etc.) in the USA and across the world. The catalog of irreconcilable influences brought by The Bad Plus onto the stage through original compositions and a series of covers is a winning combination. This is not a jazz trio that sees “the rock influence” as merely playing loudly and referring to Led Zeppelin, Nirvana and The Pixies. With a profound experience in writing and performing across several genres, these guys are astute and bold improvisers with an ability to build, deform, reveal, destroy, and then rebuild and redesign from scratch, without losing “the song” from sight.
