The first Portuguese singer to perform in the famous Carnegie Hall in New York, Ana Moura was born in Santaremo. Having grown up in a family of musicians, she has sing fado since she was a little girl. However, like other young people across the world, she soon developed respect for other musical styles, although the allure of singing fado never diminished. In her late teens, while singing pop and rock music in a local band, Ana always included at least one fado in each performance. One night some five years ago, she and a few of her friends spontaneously visited one of the popular fado houses in Lisbon – small places for performers where singers, guitarists and aficionados come together to celebrate the touching style that has become one of the most important exported music products in Portugal. Like any other ambitious fado singer, she initially found her inspiration in the example of Amália Rodrigues, a famous singer that has become a synonym for the entire style. She soon became a lead voice of traditional fado at the time this appreciated idiom enjoyed its newfound popularity.
