Rovinj as a Photo Gallery

In the period May 8th -10th the town of Rovinj has become a photo gallery for the eighth year in a row. Five indoor venues and the town promenade have once again become an endless photographic exhibition featuring artwork addressing various themes. Rovinj’s former tobacco factory offered a display of works by the finalists of this year’s Rovinj Photodays, showing the best works in seven categories – architecture, landscape, documentary, fashion, body, portrait and art concept. The gallery of the Visual Art Centre "Batana" has prepared an exhibition of 100 best works by Croatian journalist photographers in 2014, while the Rovinj Homeland Museum hosted an art exhibition titled “India” by Luciano Monti and the especially attractive show “Masterpieces of Photography History" organized by the Splimberg Centre for Photography Research and Archiving. “Before Giaconda” is the title of the show by Robert Doisneau displayed at St. Thomas’s Church, while the Croatian Photography Association gave its exhibition at the Multimedia Centre "Rovinj- A Town Portrait", offering an overview of three workshops held in Rovinj. Along the promenade visitors has the opportunity to enjoy an outdoor exhibition by the Photography Association Fotogard, Čakovec Photo Club, Klik Photo Club and the Livingstone Association which displayed photographs from the “Friends of the Sea” series – a documentary collection of photographs taken in the early 20th century showing the way of life of the people living on the Croatian coast of the Adriatic.

The art shows were part of the biggest festival of photography in Croatia - Rovinj Photodays 2015, with over 8,500 works by 450 authors from 30 states competing to enter the contest. After national selections selected their favourites, artist and photographer David Bate decided on the final list of the best artwork. This year’s event was especially interesting as for the first time Grand Prix was awarded and this first one was won by a series of portraits "Are You There” by Argentinian, Rodrigo Illescas. As the overall winner Illescas will hold a solo exhibition at next year’s Rovinj Photodaysim 2016.
