The largest regional photography festival, Rovinj Photodays, ended with an award ceremony at Hotel Lone. This year, an international jury comprised of Michael Diemar (a gallery owner, curator, collector and lecturer based in London), Zarko Vijatovic (a photographer and art historian), and Goran Trbuljak (a conceptual artist, cinematographer and professor at the Academy of Drama Arts), and lead by Markita Franulic, president, director of the Technical Museum in Zagreb, curator, documentarian and art historian, decided who the most successful artists were.
Nenad Saljic won the award for best photography publications for last year, while Maja Jokic won the award for best fashion photography. Mario Pucic won the award for best landscape photography, which was the category with the most contestants, while Bojan Mrdenovic won the award for best architecture photography.
Last year’s winner in the category for documentary photography, Mario Topic, won the same award this year as well for his documentary project titled “Life with Chronic Depression,” while Barbara Saric won the award for best applied photography. Nives Miljesic won in the nude/body category with her photographic story about herself and her mother, while Nikola Serventic won in the category titled “the portrait.” Davor Konjikusic won the prestigious award for best art project.
Within the award ceremony, special acknowledgements for contributions to photography were also given to two artists – Zvonimir Baricevic from Zagreb and Miljenko Smokvina from Rijeka. Josip Klarica, an artist from Zagreb, a student of Prague and a master of optical and chemical processes “who harmonizes the content and manner of photography, and who, with the help of a simple ‘black box,’ obtains impressive photos,” was given the lifetime achievement award.
The award ceremony was preceded by numerous daytime happenings. Along with workshops and events, the master class workshop about fashion photography held by American Michael David was especially popular, while Dane Michael Diemar gave a lecture on modern photography and the photography market. An underwater photography workshop was held at the diving club by famous photographers Danijel Frka and Marino Brzac, while a review of portfolios by Leila Topic, Milan Zivkovic, Stefanio Rosll and Massimo Sordi was held at the Multimedia Center. On the terrace of Hotel Adriatic, a reception with coffee was organized with this year’s lifetime achievement award winner Josip Klarica and photographer Ivan Posavec. In the evening, at the same venue, a projection of a few photography exhibitions was organized. This year’s Photo Challenge, a traditional photography competition in which more than 200 photographers partook, was held based on a new concept. The daytime photo challenge was theme-based, and the photographers had to find the most beautiful and most original Rovinj postcard. In the nighttime competition, motifs were found on the boardwalk, on town squares and streets. The winners of this year’s photo challenge will be announced on June 27th, and the winners will get a valuable camera.
The 6th consecutive Rovinj Photodays Festival, which is the largest in the region, was organized by Astoria and the LivingStone Association from Rijeka. The general sponsor was Maistra, while the co-sponsor was the Tourist Association of Rovinj.
