In cooperation with catering facilities, the Tourist Board of the Town of Rovinj was the organiser and the principal promoter of the manifestation entitled “The Night of St. Lawrence” this year as well. During the night, the inhabitants of this most tourist town of them all in the whole of the Adriatic, and their guests too, celebrate the one evening in a year when the glittering trace of falling comets is visible best.
This natural phenomenon that causes gazing stares into the sky and stirs up romantic moods in people, along the carefully selected music that could be heard and seen this year on as many as eight stages, confirmed the slogan that the Town of St. Euphemia is also the most romantic settlement in the Mediterranean. The atmosphere was greatly contributed by owners of restaurants, cafes and terraces, the windows of which lacked electric lighting during the evening but had the light of torches and table candles instead. Moreover, along with catering specials, romantic music and the mood, especially attractive were the light effects that followed one another on old town facades and the main town square.
Tunes and music from as many as eight locations satisfied even those most choosey regarding music taste and proclivity. There was something for everyone – ranging from evergreens, classical music, spiritual and romantic songs, to jazz standards, auteur performances and renditions of famous arias from musicals and operettas, including the so-called sentimental music and Mediterranean a cappella singing.
The Marshall Tito Square witnessed the visitors enjoying a performance by the "Dream Project", piano player Kristian Terzić and the chamber choir "Rubino" – who – especially for this occasion – arranged romantic tunes and evergreens. The band "Mildres" presented their performances of jazz standards and auteur tunes. Some one hundred metres further, at the Riviera Square, the musicians of the Croatian Musical Centre (Gorana Biondić - soprano, Mario Bokun - tenor, Robert Palić- bass, and Martina Mičija playing the piano) performed famous classical music arias, while the duo of Davor and Gracijan Terzić played local and country music. The Pignaton Aquare was reserved for the sound of blues, pop and world music, as interpreted by the duo "Denis&Nasco".
The organisers of the Night of St. Lawrence did not forget about the romantic mood in the old town part either. In Grisija, Dalmatian a cappella tunes and spiritual songs were performed by the mixed vocalists of "Rovinj". Božidar Brajković as tenor and Zoran Jašek playing the piano, thrilled the audience performing famous arias from the classical repertoire. In the Street of de Amicis, Pergolesi’s opera "La serva padrona" was staged, interpreted by Ronald Braus, baritone, and Blanka Tkalčić, mezzo-soprano, and directed and played by Dinko Bogdanić, our prominent ballet dancer and choreographer. Davor Ljubičić on the piano was responsible for providing the musical backdrop for the opera.
The Quay of Aldo Rismond was full with the gentle sound of pan flute, played by the Hungarian artist Janoš Kegye, followed by the dance rhythms of the excellent home duo "Eligio&Maurizio". The members of the Rovinj group Roxanne did their dance performances on several locations within the town, while attractive processions of the indigenous town boats, batanas, lit by fishing lights, started from the town quay and the popular beach of Baulota.
