The 9th Croatian Summer Salsa Festival

All of Rovinj is salsa dancing

Over fifty Caribbean dance instructors from around the world, nine DJs and more than three-thousand participants from all over the world gathered at the Croatian Summer Salsa Festival, which was held from June 24th until July 1st for the 9th time in Rovinj. There was salsa dancing at five unique locations, while the squares and streets of one of the most beautiful towns on the Mediterranean turned into an open-air dance floor.

The program of the Festival itself offered something for everyone – for beginners, more than one-hundred hours of dance workshops were available, more experienced dancers were given the opportunity to brush up on their already acquired skills, while the audience had the chance to enjoy the dancing, its exotic movements and the more than attractive dancers.

The Croatian Summer Salsa Festival brought together the most famous dance instructors from around the world, who held all-day workshops in order to introduce their participants to the magic of Caribbean dance forms – from salsa, rumba and bachata steps to son, cha cha cha, reggaeton and others. There were several world famous names, in terms of the dance scene, among the instructors in Rovinj - Maykel Fonts, choreographer and dancer in the movie “Street Dance 2,” You Tube stars Tanja and Jorge whose choreography to the song “Te extrano” got more than fifty million hits, and Ozy Shine, a leader in hip hop dance.

Aside from them, special ovations were paid to Eddie Torres, better known as the Mambo King, who is considered the creator of salsa line dancing. Aside from the world famous instructors and the salsa beach parties that were held, as well as the party held at the former tobacco factory, there was also another big event – the Grande Fiesta, which was held on the town’s main square. During the open-air program that went on all night, performers rotated on the main stage and were rewarded by the audience’s applauses and general approval. However, the real salsa euphoria took place around midnight when the members of “Cubismo” took the stage and simply made the audience dance to the beat of salsa with their music and rhythm.
