In Maistra’s Eden Hotel, the night before yesterday Gary Burton performed together with the musicians of the New Gary Burton Quartet, Mr Burton being a winner of several Grammys and the musician who popularised the duet format in jazz and promoted the four sticks playing style. The concert evening, incidentally the very first in Croatia by the musician, was opened by the renowned jazz player doing a rendition of the “Afro Blue” composition, written by Mango Santamaria.
Gary Barton, the famous xylophone player and winner of many prizes and awards, is one of the pioneers of fusion jazz, and is also known by being the youngest musician ever to have received the title of “Jazzman of the Year” by Down Beat. One of his most important musical co-operations, still going on, started almost four decades ago with the renowned Chick Corea.
As the warm-up to the New Gary Burton Quartet, the Šimun Matišić Trio played. This young xylophone player, born in 1996 and performing since four, played – among other compositions for the Rovinj audience – his interpretation of Chopin’s Nocturne in F minor, which the crowd greeted with special gusto.
Following the excellent New Gary Burton Quartet, a concert by one of the most famous pop and R&B singers as well as winner of 10 Grammys – George Benson – was announced for 8 July within the former Rovinj Tobacco Factory, while on 17 July the same venue will feature a performance by the Return to Forever IV, a leading jazz fusion movement group during the seventies.
