Croatia Is a Shining Star of Tourism

The evening before the 100th Session of the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) one could hear that Croatia is one of the most promising countries in the tourism industry. The hosts had offered a warm welcome for about two hundred guests from forty countries. The Tourist Board organized a town sightseeing tour during which guests had at every corner the opportunity to get acquainted with the rich culture, history and culinary offer of Rovinj.

Entertainment was organized at six locations and guests could feel the rhythm and the pulse of the town through folklore and songs performed at these beautiful sites. Members of the Brass Band and Rovinj Majorettes and a glass of champagne greeted the guests at the Small Pier, who could also, already at the next corner, at the Trg na Mostu Square, enjoy the performances of a folklore ensemble and bitinadori (singers who mimic musical instruments with their voices). The House of Batana has never left a visitor indifferent, and local fishermen also won the guests’ sympathies while weaving fishing nets all along the boardwalk, as well as kalafati, masters who construct traditional fishing boats batanas, the symbol of Rovinj. Delightful music, which accompanied the guests the entire time until their final destination – the plateau in front of the Church of St. Euphemia, the patron saint of Rovinj, was provided by folk bands “Batana”, “Plesarin”, “Šćike” and the duo “Magnolija”. The sightseeing tour ended with the degustation of excellent wine of Rovinj winemakers.

The next morning, at the 100th jubilee session, one could already hear that Croatia is a shining star of tourism.
- Croatia is a shining star of tourism. Fifteen years ago it was just a small and fairly unknown country, but today it serves as an example to others. Just continue doing what you have been doing. Keep the political will you have at the moment and the current tourist administration management, and I believe you will soon become even better, stated Taleb Rifai, the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), praising Croatia as a tourist country and Rovinj as the host of the 100th jubilee session. Furthermore, numerous visiting foreign ministers agreed that Croatia is one of the most promising countries in the tourism industry.

-Your country is rich in history and natural resources, and is an ideal holiday destination. At the same time, you are very active with UNWTO, and the very fact that the 100th Session of the Executive Council was held here will help promote this lovely town, affirmed Abulfas Garayev, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Culture and Tourism.

UNWTO (World Tourist Organization) is a specialized agency of United Nations founded with the aim to track, regulate and develop tourism in the world. It’s a leading international organization in the field of travel and tourism and its mission is to promote the development of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. Croatia has been the member of UNWTO since October 1993. The 100th Session of UNWTO has brought to Rovinj Ministers of Tourism and key experts from foreign governments who are responsible for this field of economy and is undoubtedly a great opportunity to promote Rovinj, Istria and Croatia.
