The squares and streets of Rovinj, thanks to dancers arriving from all over the globe, once again came to life in the rhythm of salsa. This unique dance event attracted, apart from 1,500 dancers, large numbers of those curious and guests of Rovinj as well who wanted to master the step of this exceptionally attractive south American dance in beginners’ and advanced dancers’ workshops.

That is, for this sixth consecutive year, Rovinj is host to the Croatian Summer Salsa Festival, a unique multicultural dance event, where elite dance instructors, Cuban bands, artists, choreographers and numerous dance buffs participate. This international festival is simultaneously the crown of the development of the salsa scene in Croatia, organised ever since 2005 by the dance club Los Mamberos and Salsa Adria Production, and supported by the Town of Rovinj, the town Tourist Board and the hotel and tourist establishment “Maistra,” in the town of St Euphemia.

It should be pointed out salsa is a dance originating from Cuba, where European and African culture entwined. This is usually a dance for couples, even though there are solo dancing versions for this type of dance significantly influenced by rumba. Different styles make it especially popular among dancers, for the dance allows improvisation and dancers’ freedom of expression. The dance is full of rhythm, with the tunes played predominantly by percussion instruments, the guitar and the piano.
