Project

Association "Babin pas" from Rovinjsko Selo launched the project "Walking With Dinosaurs in Istria" and on Friday, April 20, 2012 thereby organized field presentation and introduction to the fossilized dinosaur tracks (ichnofossils - preserved traces of the movement of organisms in the rock) in the area of Rovinj, on Gustinja beach. The presentation was held by a palaeontologist and the only dinosaurologist in Croatia, Docent Aleksandar Mezga, PhD, from the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb.
Valuable 135-million-year-old ichnofossils were discovered on the beach Gustinja from the Cretaceous era, but very little is known about that. It is interesting that here you can find the biggest sauropod dinosaur trace fossil in Istria (over 20 meters) and this is a unique area characterized by horizons with Level 6 dinosaur footprints and dinoturbation - upper surface layers completely devastated by dinosaur’s feet.
The presentation was held in order to properly evaluate this area, as well as to protect and use it for the promotion and benefit of future generations of Rovinj. Along with other interested parties, the presentation was attended by the representatives of the Tourist Board of Rovinj and the Rovinj Native Museum.
