Red Bull Air Race 2014 – traffic and parking regulation

Dear Sir or Madam,

Rovinj is to host from April 12th to April 13th, 2014 the fastest air race in the world – the Red Bull Air Race. By holding the prestigious Red Bull event here, in addition to the 7 other world-renowned destinations such as Abu Dhabi, Putrajaya, Gdynia, Ascot, Dallas, Las Vegas and China, Rovinj was shown a great honor.

During the Red Bull Air Race World Championship the world’s most exceptional pilots fly extremely fast and maneuverable aircrafts between 25 meters high pylons. The challenging aerial racetrack in Rovinj is set over water along the north coast and near the old town center, which serves as a spectacular background for thousands of spectators of this amazing air race, the first of its kind in Croatia.

Such a large event demands outstanding organization and special safety regulations. Therefore, before and during the competition special traffic and parking regulations will be in force to reduce to a minimum the traffic congestion which could prevent the safety and the unfolding of the event.

The stands and other structures for the organizers, competing teams and visitors will be erected a few days before the beginning of the competition (starting with April 4th) and dismantled only after it ends, which is why parking will not be possible on the parking lots Valdibora, Boksiti, Concetta and Željeznička stanica (Train Station). A parking area in front of the football field will be reserved for the residents of the pedestrian zone who have their own parking spots. Transportation from the center of Rovinj to the football field will be organized according to a schedule soon to be available at the Valdibora circular intersection. This mode of parking and transport may last for several days even after the end of the Red Bull Air Race, while the stands are being dismantled.

From Friday, April 11th to Sunday, April 13th supplies will be delivered to businesses located in the pedestrian zone only in the morning, from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., after which the traffic in the pedestrian zone will be stopped for all vehicles (including taxis and service vehicles), excluding emergency vehicles.

Since we expect the arrival of 60,000 to 80,000 visitors from April 11th to April 13th, special traffic regulations will be in force for all residents, visitors and guests of Rovinj. Traffic and entry to the town will be restricted, in line with the number of available parking spaces. Volunteers all over the town will guide the drivers and visitors to the closest parking lots and bus stops from where they can reach the competition.

The town has arranged 11 free parking zones for visitors arriving to Rovinj. From the most remote parking lots in Valalta, Polari and Veštar buses will provide free transportation to where the competition takes place. The bus line 1 will operate from Valalta to Mondelaco, the bus line 2 will run from the campsite Polari to a bus stop in Stjepan Radić St. (across from the OTP Bank), while the bus line 3 will also operate from the campsite Veštar to a bus stop in Stjepan Radić St. and back to the campsite along the handball playing field “Pod lipama”. The bus schedule will be published at the designated bus stops and parking areas (a map marked with such parking lots, bus lines and stops is attached).

On Palm Sunday, April 13th, the Holy Mass will be celebrated and transport for the devotees will be arranged from different parts of the town, as indicated on the attached map.

The special traffic regulations will also be in force in the Dr. Martin Horvat Hospital and Cape Muccia areas. The whole area surrounding the Dr. Martin Horvat Hospital is reserved for emergency vehicles and will be closed for all other vehicles and pedestrians, while the area around Cape Muccia will be closed for all vessels (the use of vessels anchored there will not be permitted), except for emergency vehicles, vessels and helicopters.

Due to strict safety measures marine traffic will also be regulated. The air racetrack is situated in Validobra Bay, therefore marine traffic is prohibited in the zone from Monteo to Figarola Velika Island and Cape Muccia. Vessels are to travel at low speeds outside the restricted zone, since entering the zone would result not only in high penalties for the offender, but also in the event being interrupted.

Dear residents, we hope you understand the need for establishing the abovementioned traffic and transport regulations while the competition takes place, and that you will follow the instructions and reduce the use of your personal vehicle to a minimum. Please inform your guests of the regulations and ask them to plan their arrival accordingly, in order to avoid the expected traffic congestion.
