Last Saturday in March, employees of the Rovinj Town Tourist Board gave away around five hundred seedlings of autochthonous fruit varieties.
Traditionally, for the fifth consecutive year, the locals received three hundred rose hip shoots as a gift from their tourist board in cooperation with the Skink company for production of planting materials, landscaping and professional assistance in agriculture, and for the first time a hundred young stems of jujube and a hundred of fig.
As usual, the distribution caused great interest among the people of Rovinj, so the young and attractive trees, which the TB hopes will once again adorn town gardens and orchards, were taken away in just ten minutes. The jujube shoot was in the greatest demand – older locals say its fruit is very tasty.
„Jujube does not require a lot of activity in terms of protection. Its fruit is good for consumption and for making quality liqueurs and brandies. As this is an autochthonous domestic variety of fruit, just like the fig and the rose hip, we hope it will return to the gardens of Rovinj, from which it has practically disappeared over the past years without a good reason “, said agronomist Željko Prgomet.
