For the twenty-first time in a row, from April 26th to 29th, the traditional regatta ‘Rovinj- Pesaro- Rovinj’ took place. This year twelve boats with about one hundred crew members participated in the regatta which connects two shores of the Adriatic Sea on a route that was once the route of old medieval sailors who sailed their boats called trabakuls.
Unlike last year when it was raining and the weather was poor, this year we had good weather and sailors from Italy, Slovenia and Croatia had “fair winds and following seas” what helped them in crossing their route which was 79 miles in one direction.
In Pesaro town harbor, though tired from navigating, Rovinj sailors promoted the town of Saint Euphemia in the best possible way by presenting its gastronomy, promotion material and by socializing and organizing a basketball game between the Rovinj and Pesaro seniors.
Just like Istrian smoked ham and nice wine, Rovinj Tourist Board’s promotion material was gone in the blink of an eye.
In cooperation with „Lega navale“from Pesaro, the cross-Adriatic 1st May regatta was organized by the Rovinj Sailing Club „Ronhill Maestral“.
I like this shore of mine. One... but which? There are two “traversata”.
It might have been curiosity, but it was more a question of need.
The stronger and the weaker, the better and the worse, the richer and the poorer, a strong will and the lack of it, the shore and the distance, the fear and the insecurity, one should take off and get there with a purpose, rarely also without one.
Navigare vivere est.
It started with small boats until the trabakul appeared. Sulla rotta dei trabaccoli.
People traded, shared experience, and learned different customs, but always with the fragrance of the Mediterranean. We were seen off with a view or a waiving hand showing us the way.
Later, we would lose the sight of the shore, and our only friends were the moon, the stars and a lighthouse in the distance. We would go on, rowing, using the engine, our sails or the sea currents. Sometimes it was risky, scary, and sometimes joyful and pleasant. We would leave upon our own decision or someone would put us up to it.
We would return as the winners or the defeated. Mostly satisfied, experienced and with a feeling somebody is looking out for us and with a sense of care for one another. Today that is the «Rovinj-Pesaro-Rovinj» regatta... and the other way around.
