Exceptionally attractive vocals by Talya Solan from Israel, Juan Pinillo from Spain and Pedro Mestra from Portugal blended their voices with the instruments played by Wafira Shaikheldin from Africa (the accordion, violin and oud), Alen Sinkauz from Croatia (bass), Robert Pistolesi from Italy (drums) and Stefan Saletti, also from Italy (bouzoki and oud). These gifted musicians weaved the melodies of southern Portugal, flamenco and the south of Italy with the rhythms of north of Africa, the Balkans and Yemen. The songs make one hear, but also feel, the sounds of Mediterranean ports, as well as different instruments that, throughout centuries of tradition of playing, enabled the exchange, pleasant encounters and dialogue between cultures among performers and listeners, which should not be lost under the onset of modern times.
The second part of the evening, when the Gustafi performed, was – as expected – most fun and by far the loudest. The energy these musicians have and burst forth from the stage is indestructible, so their almost two-hour long show seemed more like a separate concert. Apart from old and well known hits, the Gustafi, led by Edi Maružin, promoted the latest album “Chupacabra”. An excellent performance was also given by the band member Barbara Munjas, who brought the atmosphere at the square almost to boiling point with her voice, but dance too.
