Located at the foot of the main city square is a smaller square, often the setting for various cultural-entertainment events in the city. One of the recent events to take place here occured on 27 July, when the Ri-theatre from Rijeka presented their ethno-cabaret act, "Lijepom ti ga našom" (Our Beautiful).
A man from the mountainous region of Zagoria undertakes a trip to the sea with the objective of finding his wife, but is quickly confronted with a myriad of verbal misunderstandings, a result of the many dialects spoken in different regions by the inhabitants of Croatia. After an arduous search, he locates his wife on the island of Brae, in a place called Čelinje.
The performance, which lasts between sixty and seventy minutes, is performed by five actors. We would like to stress that this perfomance promotes what is commonly known, not only in Croatia but throughout the rest of the world, as "street theatre", which has grown more popular and is now very widely-spread in the world of theatre. Its main characteristic is that it nurtures a completely intimate relationship with the audience which, due to the close proximity of the actors and their surroundings, leaves them feeling as if they have been invited to participate in the performance itself. The actors, attired in traditional Croatian garments, successfully imitate the various Croatian dialects which, spoken in light and entertaining dialogues, sound attractive and exotic. The multitude of domestic and foreign tourists who have poured into Rovinj in great waves this year were once again an inquisitive and generous public, held rapt by the actors and their living performance
As we were able to gather from the acting troupe, they have had guest appearances in 28 cities throughout Croatia, of which they made honourable mention of their performance during the "Zadar Dreams" street festival.
We spoke with Ljiljana Šolić, director and actor with the troupe. "Last year's performance of Monster in the Closet brought us to Rovinj, so that now many of the children who were present then already know us, and were curious to know more about the characters who were engraved into their memories. We perform plays with a lot of improvisation, with special attention devoted to making as much contact as possible with the audience. Travelling around Croatia, we present in as entertaining manner as possible the many interesting sights to be seen here, such as the popular Istrian oxen - boškarini, the white-hooded vultures from the island of Cres, the appearance of aliens on the island of Pag, and many others", she said in brief.
