The town quay in Rovinj, most touristic but most picturesque in the Adriatic too, became a unique exhibition out in the open beginning of June. The panels along the walkway, in the immediate vicinity of the sea and the sun-bathed fishing boats, presented the exhibition “The Incomparable Blue” – by the best Croatian, Slovenian and Italians masters of underwater photography, photo agencies – Cropix and Pixel, and the most famous regional photography magazine – ReFoto.
The third-in-a-row Photodays in Rovinj started with the opening ceremony in the Multimedia centre, where the exhibition by those nominated for prizes was set up for display as well, part of the contest in which 650 authors participated with 10 thousand works. The largest regional photography festival was opened by Photodays Director Denis Redić, and – on behalf of the host town and the sponsor of hotel and catering establishment Maistra and the co-sponsor Tourist Board, Odeta Sapač, the Board Director, who pointed out the importance of the project, saying Rovinj was not merely one of the most romantic towns but most photogenic in all Adriatic as well.
The first festival day was taking place under the motto of “Save the Date,” while “19th and 20th Century Photography Portrait” was opened in the Regional Museum of Rovinj. This is an exhibition by the Italian Photography Research and Archiving Centre, with the most prominent authors to be singled out being photography classics such as C. Beaton, D. Lange, F. Capa, H. C. Bresson, W. Klein, J. L. Sieff.
Great interest by the wider audience and media was stirred as well by the exhibition set up in the Adris Gallery, somewhat controversially entitled “Bodies, Objects and their Images.” The exhibition encompasses erotic photography by world masters such as H. Newton, S. Taylor Wood, N. Godin, M. Ray, R. Gibson, N. Araki...
In the Batana Photo Art Gallery the exhibition of “Press Photography” was opened, including a hundred best Croatian newspaper photographs from the preceding year, while photographs by this year’s winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award, Renco Kosinožić, were exhibited in the Church of St Thomas.
Along with the exhibitions, Photodays included numerous expert lectures and workshops too. Borislav Božić lectured on the historical and visual arts context of the camera obscura and the artistic practice. Dean Žvorc, along with a lecture on Colour Management, also held a workshop on calibrating the monitor. Monte Mulini featured a workshop on the creation of film shorts, led by Marko Butraković, and in the Underwater Activity Club, as part of the competition in underwater photography Alpe Adria Cup, Danijel Frka led a workshop on the charm, beauty and possibilities of underwater photography.
