Rarely heard fiery music
The Avantgarde Jazz Festival will host yet another exceptional musician – James Carter and his Organ Trio. James Carter is a talented player of several instruments and composer, considered one of the best baritone saxophone players in the world. His Organ Trio is one of the most exciting bands of today’s jazz scene, composed of Carter himself, Gerard Gibbs (Hammond organ) and Leonard King (drums).
The trio played smoothly and with dedication at the Rovinj Adris Hall, getting lost in inspiration and performing with intensity – giving us a fiery show we rarely witness. One could feel in their performance the joy of playing music, of communicating and taking on challenges. Especially exciting was their conversation – full of spirit, wit and banter. Fully absorbed by the music, stimulated by adrenaline, even when another member of the band was playing his solo, Carter created explosions of rapture with his saxophone, not fighting the impulses which came to him in these special instants of collective inspiration.
The musician from Detroit had burst onto the world scene at the beginning of 1990’s, when he was encouraged by Lester Bowie to move to New York. He played in the bands Lester Bowie’s New York Organ Ensemble, Julius Hemphill's Saxophone Sextet, and Art Ensemble of Chicago with which he visited Europe for the first time, taking part in their blues project. He later performed with the greatest jazz stars such as Herbie Hancock, Betty Carter, Sonny Rollins and many others. James Carter is the leader of several renowned bands, playing stylistically different music, from funk, bebop and gipsy swing to tributes to such great artists as Bille Holiday and Django Reinhardt.
