This year's ecology campaign, traditionally held at the beginning of the summer season and organized by the Town of Rovinj’s Tourist Association, was officially kicked off last weekend with the planting of ten pine tree seedlings throughout Zlatni Rt (Golden Cape) territory.
Along with members of the Tourist Association, lead by director Odete Sapac, several city officials, accompanied by the city’s major, participated in this campaign. Also in attendance, representing the tourism economy was Kristian Sustar, manager of the largest hotel in the city. Also in attendance were employees from “Communal Services”, as well as individuals from the catering industry, firefighters, and citizens of the city.
“The planting of tree seedlings towards the end of May is only one of an entire series of ecological actions to be made, as organized by the Tourist Association. Since the aim of this eco campaign is to make citizens aware of the need to protect the environment, this year we decided to focus our efforts on a specific target group, children. For the first time, educational workshops in the field of environmental protection were organized for our city’s youngest citizens. We will also be continuing with the tradition of handing out seedlings for people to plant. Towards the end of month, on March 31st, the distribution of three hundred pomegranate seedlings, as well one hundred jujube seedlings (for the first time this year) will take place. In April, we also plan to hand out four thousand flower seedlings”, states Rovinj’s Tourist Association director, Odete Sapac.
Several ecological actions, including the clean up and tidying of the coastline from Lone Bay to «Villas Rubin» tourist village, are planned for the month of May. Elementary and secondary school students will be participating in this action, in association with employees from “Communal Services”.
Elementary and secondary school students will also play the largest role in the planting of new plants on Zlatni Rt. Members of Rovinj’s Hunting Society will clean up the island of Sveti Ivan na Pucini and prepare it for this year’s tourist season, while members of the “Meduza” Fishing Society will take care of the island of Figarola. Members of the Rovinj’s “Friends Society” will also contribute to the success of this years’ eco campaign by participating in the tidying up of our islands and coastline.
The largest task of all will be the clean up of the seabed from the city's harbor to Lone Bay. This will take place from the 11th to 13th of May and will bring together over two hundred native and foreign divers.
This action is a joint effort, organized by the Tourist Association, Croatia’s Diving Association, the “Diver Sport Center” and Rovinj’s Diving Club. It will be one of the largest ecological clean up efforts ever to be made on the Adriatic. The cleaning of the seabed will end with the stocking of the sea with 500 young sea bass”, claims Odete Sapac.
The first in the series of ecological actions to occur, gave city officials and representative members of the tourist economy board an opportunity to become familiar with this year's propaganda materials. Academic sculptor Vanja Popek created posters, which serve to inform visitors that the citizens of Rovinj care for their environment. These posters flooded the city of St. Euphrasius with their deep blue color representing the Adriatic Sea.
The posters also contain the color green, representing the city’s surroundings and the well-known symbol for Rovinj. Along with these posters, the Tourist Association created radio info-commercials, fliers and leaflets for the citizens of Rovinj reminding them why it is important to protect the environment and to invite them to partake in preserving it.
