The construction of Batana, the traditional Rovinj's fishing boat, started in Rivijera Square, one of the most beautiful places on the town promenade, on July 15.
The autochthonous fishing boat will be built by two kalafats (wooden boat builders), Mladen Takač and his assistant Giordano Bossi every evening during the two-month period, plank by plank, to prepare her for the festive launching on September 16, St. Euphemia’s day and Rovinj town's day.
The fourth Batana under construction in the organization of the The Batana House (Kuća o batani) Eco Museum is of classic design, 5,5 meters long, and her name will be Arupina.
The name is derived from the Latin word Arupinum. That is the proud name of the Rovinj’s Rowing Club, the Batana’s godfather, which is celebrating one hundred years since its founding. After the launching ceremony, Batana will be presented as a gift to the town of Gospić as Rovinj‘s friend.
The beginning of construction was complemented by a diverse cultural and entertainment program and a delicious gastronomic offer.
Two stages hosted the Batana folk band, Sergio Preden Gato, Sv. Petar vocal band from Sv. Petar u Šumi, and Marco Garbin Cultural Society.
The night of fishing tradition was rich with seafood delicacies - sardines and mussels and polenta complemented by a deciliter of white wine. Special treat were free cantaloupes and watermelons.
The project of Batana construction was initiated to revive the memory of this traditional boat of Rovinj's fishermen and to be left as inheritance to future generations. The Commission of the Rovinj's Tourist Association nominated the project for this year’s Blue Flower Reward (Plavi cvijet) of the Croatian Tourist Association. Sponsors of this event are the Rovinj’s Tourist Association, the Town of Rovinj and Maistra Company.
