After an absence of exactly two decades from the Croatian art scene and his last exhibition, presented in the Zodiac Gallery of Osijek in 1981, Rovinj was given the opportunity to witness the comeback of one of the most influential and important contemporary Croatian artists of our time, Eugen Feller.
When you take into account the number of institutions in the city of Rovinj who invest in art, how abundant the city's artistic tradition is, not to mention the type of atmosphere produced by the many types of art presented and created here over the last few decades, it is no wonder that another master painter has decided to choose Rovinj as their Croatian address. The opening of the exhibition, which took place 7 August, 2001, was attended by about fifty admirers, as well as the artist himself. The exhibit is comprised of ten works, of both large and medium format, which depict simple yet powerful symbols in geometric form, placed in specific relation to geometric circles, which symbolize perfection and eternity. Feller is a passionate guardian/follower of the Croatian tradition of minimalist abstract art, which has experienced its pinnacle in the works of the world renowned and accepted Croatian artist Julija Knifer.
Rhomboidal shapes and spiraling whirlpools, it is accented, develop only within the body of the circle from which only outlines remain, and which ultimately result in an aggressive expansion of whiteness. Renouncing all that is traditional in creation, the author has made a committment to an extreme variant of self-emancipation in the pictures, whose meaning is to be found solely within its plastic structure, nor does he offer any other type of interpretation other than the primary one at hand - visual. The paintings say what they want to say - it is in this communicative avariciousness, in the mystical plastic silence that they bring into being their original speech. Ivica Župan, who is an expert on Feller's works and the author of a retrospective of his last creations, is inclined towards simply saying that Feller's latest works exist and that he painted them, but to this he adds that these paintings stand for nothing other than their own existence, they do not represent an attempt to change or be different from existing styles, nor do they attempt to embellish or seek anything in return.
