Exhibition opening

The exhibition entitled Return, by Zora Matić, will open at the Rovinj-Rovigno City Museum on May 16, 2025, starting at 7:00 PM.

The exhibition features a selection of around fifty works that have become part of the museum's holdings through purchases and two major donations. In addition to paintings, drawings and objects that were previously owned by the Museum, new acquisitions have enriched the museum's collection with key works by this painter, creating a whole that can be used to reconstruct her artistic work and gain an understanding of the phases, changes and all the characteristics that are read and followed in her creative work. The number and quality of the works make the Rovinj Museum the only museum whose collection represents the complete artistic work of Zora Matić.

Zora Matić came to Rovinj in the early 1950s on the recommendation of the charismatic Bruno Mascarelli and decided to stay here. The gloomy streets of the abandoned town, the melancholic atmosphere and the dilapidated facades inspired the drawings and paintings that she created in the 1950s and 1960s, mostly in black and white. Next come portraits, depictions of women's, children's and the occasional male face emerging from a black background, and then portraits with emphasized colors and black contours. These are faces that reveal fear, sadness, concern, and hopelessness. In the early 1970s, Zora Matić opened a new chapter in her work. She discovered the technique of montage of collaged fragments, used newspaper clippings and used them to create an insinuated and reshaped image of the world. Her fascination with collage would remain a constant in her work. It is a technique that suits the artist's restless and chaotic spirit, as recognized by Daša Drndić and Bora Ćosić. The world also recognizes Zora Matić, and in the late 1950s she exhibited in London, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam, concludes Rogović. The author and curator of the exhibition is Elizabeta Rogović.

Opening hours:

Tuesday - Sunday: 10:00 - 12:00 and 16:00 - 20:00 / Monday closed.

The exhibition is open until 24.8.2025.
