A veritable musical mass was held in the Church of St. Euphemia on 26 July, as connoisseurs of classical music gathered in the church to listen to the heavenly sounds of a quartet of musicans from Prague. With faith in the power of music, the devoted public sat mesmerized in the pews of the impressive cathedral, built at the beginning of the 18th century, taking pleasure in each note and watching every move of the masterful foursome from Prague. The cathedral's bell tower, which also added to the atmosphere, measures in at over 60 metres in height and is adorned by a copper statue of the church's patron saint, which also acts as a weather vane by spinning upon an axle to indicate the direction of the wind with its right arm. In this ambience it was impossible not to notice the professionalism and high quality of the performance given by this classical quartet, who are widely known for the articulation and coordination of their instruments and the beautiful tones they produce.
Established in 1987 as an atypical ensemble consisting of only two instruments - the bassoon and the harpiscord - the quartet is now comprised of the following performers: Libena Sequardtaova (oboe), Ivan Sequardt (oboe), Luboš Hucek (bassoon) and Josef Kšica (harpsicord). The ensemble have had many successful guest appearances throughout Europe and the world, with their greatest success taking place at an international competition for chamber music in Osaka, where they were awarded first prize and the gold medal. We must also mention that all of the musicians are, when not playing together as a quartet, members of the leading Czech orchestra, and that they are frequently in the studio recording. The quartet recorded their first CD in 1992, and have followed that up with 2 CDs, recording trio sonatas composed by the Czech baroque composer Jan Dismas-Zelenke, as well as compositions by Vivaldi, Albinoni, Bach, Telemann, Hendl and many others. Judging from the above list of composers, we can conclude that the quartet's repertoire mainly consists of compositions written by the great names of classical music.
