5TH YEAR IN A ROW - PHOTODAYS IN ROVINJ
Croatia's biggest photography festival
For the fifth year running, Rovinj was the host of the largest photographic spectacle in Croatia called Photodays – popular event that brought together a large number of photographers from the country and the region to the city of St. Euphemia. Again this year the festival includes numerous contents, a series of attractive exhibitions, numerous workshops, lectures, and organized meetings with the authors of this beautiful art.
Various dignitaries from the public and political life of Istria attended the opening ceremony along with the authors, festival organizers and their sponsors, while the Minister of Culture, Andrea Zlatar Violić, had the honour of opening the festival. She pointed out that this is an impressive event that brings together a large number of photographers from Croatia and the region, and presents a summary of their work throughout the year that will be exhibited in Croatian and regional cities and museums. Mrs. Zlatar Violić also pointed out that nowadays photography became one of the key media, a kind of guardian/scrapbook of collective memory through the eyes of the author and his artistic view through the camera lens.
On behalf of the host, the Mayor of Rovinj, Giovanni Sponza, welcomed the participants of the festival and used the opportunity to thank the creators of the impressive photos taken in moments of inspiration for their participation in Photodays and their visit. Thanks to the photographers, Rovinj is today the distinctive town with a soul, said Mayor Sponza to the participants of Photodays. The Festival Director, Denis Redić, pointed out that Photodays, as a major photography event in the country, has survived despite the crisis what proves its quality. Mr. Ninoslav Vidović from Maistra Hotel Company reminded those present that Rovinj offers so much more that sun and the sea. It provides an extensive and attractive cultural program which, together with tourism, presents a town we are always happy to return to, once we experience its charms.
At the festival visitors can see exhibitions of local and foreign authors in the Multimedia Center (MMC), CVU "Batana", Heritage Museum, Church of St. Thomas, Adris gallery and along Rovinj waterfront. Photodays also include the exhibition of the finalists of this year's contest in the MMC and the Croatian contemporary fashion photography that can be seen at Adris gallery. This year, a special recognition - the lifetime achievement award that is awarded annually to one author for his years-long work and outstanding contribution to photography, went to the photographer Mladen Tudor, whose retrospective exhibition can be seen in the church of St. Thomas. The outdoor exhibitions include the presentation of the works of Cropix and Pixsell photo agencies, so the visitors had a chance to see the best news photographs taken during the past year.
