The third sports-recreational event organized by the City of Rovinj, Sports Union, Tourist Association and Maistra, the popular ‘Popolana’, attracted a large crowd. Town streets and squares were filled with children from ‘Neven’ and ‘Naridola’ kindergartens, pupils from ‘Vladimir Nazor’, ‘Bernardo Benussi’ and ‘Juraj Dobrila’ elementary schools and students from the ‘Eugen Kumičić’ trade school, also known as Črnje, and the Italian High School.
Parents, friends, teachers and members of various professional and amateur sports clubs from Rovinj joined the youth. Simultaneous with competitions organized for the youngest, including fishing from the town fountain, and a special program designed for high school students, one could enjoy the attractive program performed by girls from the ‘Arabesque’ rhythmic gymnastics club and the ‘Roxanne’ gymnastics club.
Tops with the ‘Popolana’ emblem, Eurofestival souvenirs, house plants and handmade souvenirs crafted by wards of the Domenico Pergolis Home for the Elderly and Infirm and children from town kindergartens were sold from lively market stalls. Since this year’s 3rd and three day event had its spirit expressed in the motto ‘1+1= A Million Steps – Live to be a hundred!’ all income from sales will be spent on the purchase of orthopedic beds for the local retirement home. As Rovinj marathon runner Mirjana Kmačić Pellizzer said: ‘We are running for our senior citizens to show that elderly years can be as nice as any other age’.
