The Mediterranean Magic in Rovinj
On the second evening of the festival of Mediterranean songs, dance and culture, Mariana Ramos, the singer from Cabo Verde, captivated the audience. Her velvet voice, acoustic guitars, drums and cavaquinho intertwined traditional and modern sounds by combining Jazz melodies with Brazilian and African music and Morna, the Cabo Verde blues inspired by Fado.
The singer performed in Rovinj for the first time and mesmerized her audience. Her voice full of emotion transported those gathered on the main town square to exotic places, and for a moment reminded them of the Cabo Verde Queen – the legendary barefoot singer Cesária Évoria.
After the emotional performance of Mariana Ramos the stage was taken by the Ethno Band Šćike. The merry group introduced the audience to the sounds of their homeland in the best possible light, by playing on the seldom used on stage traditional Istrian music instruments – the diatonic accordion, šuškalice, volarice, sopele, mišnjice and đembe.
With these traditional instruments they succeeded in presenting the musical and cultural heritage of Istria in a different, unusual and original way. Šćike cheered up the audience with their performance and showed everyone that Istria, with its musical tradition intertwined with modern sounds, has much to be proud of.
