Exuberant Festival of Mediterranean Folk Music

Again this year the Festival Sete Sóis Sete Luas was organized to gather all ethnic music lovers. Namely, the town of Rovinj was the venue of a traditional Mediterranean festival of folk music. This two-day festival introduced five performers.

During the first evening, the central stage of the town’s main square hosted a very popular Italian orchestra "L'Orchestra a colori di Genazzano" that thrilled the audience with their gorgeous and attractive musical numbers. This is not surprising, especially when you know that "L’Orchestra a Colori di Genazzano" is one of the most prestigious musical groups of the Italian region of Lazio and the expression of the orchestra "Banda Musicale" from Genazzano. The orchestra, founded in 1860, is led by Maestro Enrico Silvestri since 1992. One of the novelties is the presence of instruments and the repertoire is moved closer to the younger generation. Under the baton of Maestro Silvestri the orchestra has participated in important events in Italy and abroad, such as concerts held for the House of Representatives and the parade during the opening of the Oktoberfest.

Then we witnessed the exceptional stage performance of the singer and songwriter with the voice coloured by soul, Michel Montrond, the rising star of Cape Verde. This young musician is an important ambassador of Cape Verde music and a man who wants to export musical gems of his homeland, the Cape Verde’s island of Fogo. His sound is stylistically somewhere between Africa and Brazil, and sentimental and lively songs he performs convey the soul of the audience to his warm equatorial world

At the end of the first evening of the festival, the audience enjoyed the performance of another orchestra made up of musicians of the Mediterranean namely, Algerian Salim Allal (vocals and percussion), Tunisian Nawel Ben Kraiem (vocals and guitar), Spaniards David Leon di Ceuta (drums and percussion) and Hamza Castro (percussion) and the Portuguese Sofia Neide (bass) and José Peixoto (guitar) performing under the name "7Sois.Med.Arab.Orkestra". Their project represents a cultural and musical richness of Mediterranean countries, and through their differences and points of accord, musicians are persistent in trying to honour the contribution of Arab civilization in the history of Europe and a peacekeeping mission of music. It should be noted that "7Sois.Med.Arab.Orkestra" is an original artistic creation of the Festival Sete Sóis Sete Luas, which celebrated its 22nd anniversary this year.

The second evening of the festival of Mediterranean folk music „Sete Sois Sete Luas“ (Seven Suns Seven Moons) was marked by an Israeli singer of Persian origin, Mor Karbasi. This descendant of Moroccan Jews and Persians took the audience on a musical journey with her extraordinary voice from the present day to her roots, thereby creating a real cultural "melting pot". By singing in Spanish, Hebrew, Ladino and English and fluttering between the traditional sounds and modern influences - from medieval Arab-Moorish Spain, across North Africa and Mediterranean Europe all the way to Israel, from Hebrew liturgical poetry to the old Sephardic ballads which she learned from her mother, Mor Karbasi took the audience to another, lesser -known, but very fascinating musical world.

While, the very process of exploring the world, its rapprochement and understanding is one of the main objectives of the traditional Mediterranean music festival, which is being promoted by the Culture Network in 30 cities in eleven different countries of the Mediterranean and Portuguese-speaking countries - Brazil, Cabo Verde, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Slovenia, and since 2008, Croatia and the town of Rovinj. The Festival presents folk music, street theatre and visual art projects, along with the participation of great names of the Mediterranean culture. Given its European dimension and the high cultural value of the project, it is supported by the European Union through the programmes Kaleidoscope, Culture 2000 and Interreg IIIB Medocc. The project aims to enable international exchange of artists and cultures through various forms of art (music, photography, enogastronomy, culture).

This year’s 22nd edition of the festival in the town of Rovinj ended with a performance by Croatian representatives, a popular folk rock band Gustafi. The organizer of this praiseworthy event is Associacao Cultural Sete Sois Sete Luas, based in Portugal and Italy, and co-organizers in Rovinj and Istria are the Tourist Board of the Town of Rovinj, the town of Rovinj, Istria County, and Edi Maružin from the band Gustafi.
