In a full church of St Euphemia, a great concert by the Zagreb Chamber Orchestra, led by the world renowned violinist Tonko Ninčević, opened this year’s 15th concert cycle of the Rovinj Summer Festival. During the first concert part, the audience had the opportunity to hear the B Major Divertimento by W. A. Mozart (Andante, Allegro Assai, Allegro di molto), and Haydn’s Concert for the violin and orchestra in C Major (Allegro moderato, Adagio, Finale-Presto). The violin role was entrusted to the renowned and awarded Russian violinist Elena Denisova, who simply enthralled the audience by her musical emotion and performance.
Similar listeners’ emotions were stirred in the second concert part by the young Chinese soprano Amy Yeung, with the following arias: "When I'm laid in Earth" from Purcell’s opera "Dido and Aeneas" and "Vidit suum dulcem natum" and "Cujus animam gementem" from Pergolesi’s "Stabat Mater". She responded to the long applause she earned by an unplanned addition – a performance of the black spiritual song "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot". As could be expected, two encores were also given by the members of the Zagreb Chamber Orchestra, performing the "Third Symphony in D Major” by Sorkočević (Allegro, Andante, Presto) and Janaček’s “Orchestral Suite” (Moderato, Adagio, Andante con moto, Presto, Adagio and Andante).
Katja Markotić, a mezzo-soprano and the artistic director, used the opening of this year’s Festival to thank the Town and the Tourist Board for several years of patronage, and church dignitaries for permission to use the grand church of St Euphemia and hospitality.
