The 15th Rovinj Summer Festival was opened with a concert by the Zagreb Chamber Orchestra and the soloist Stjepan Hauser on the violoncello, and Katja Markotić, a mezzo-soprano, conducted by maestro Oresto Shourgoto.
This great jubilee and the festival’s longevity was an occasion to thank the art director Katja Markotić, who has brought acclaimed and world renowned musicians to Rovinj for fifteen straight years and who, according to deputy mayor William Uljanić, turned a local festival into an international one. On behalf of the town and the Tourist Board, deputy mayor Marino Budicin and the Tourist Board Director Odeta Sapač presented flowers and a plaque for special contribution and development of culture in the Town of St Euphemia to the Festival Art Director.
The performance by the Zagreb Chamber Orchestra was the most beautiful congratulation the Summer Festival gave to Rovinj folk and their guests for the opening of this year’s season. The concert was held in the grandiose Church of St Euphemia, opened by ancient songs and tunes and finished by Mozart’s Divertimento in B-major K 137. Apart from Caldara’s aria "Vage Luci" from the opera with the same title, and Purcell’s "When I'm Laid in Earth" from the opera "Dido and Enea," listeners were raised to their feet by a performance of Haydn’s Concerto No. 1 for the violoncello and strings in C-major, as interpreted by Stjepan Hauser, who also gratified the audience with an addition - "Aloun" by Giovanni Sollima.
The performance by the mezzo-soprano Katja Markotić who sang Gluck’s aria "Che faro senza Euridice" from the opera “Orpheus,” made the crowd to ask for encore – after which the artist did a rendition of Gounod’s "Evening Song".
