ROVINJ PHOTODAYS – THE 6TH FESTIVAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY OPENS
Rovinj – the Regional Center for Quality Photography
Photodays, the Rovinj Festival of Photography, is a compelling and important art event in Croatia and the wider region. For the sixth edition of the event Rovinj, the town whose patron saint is St. Euphemia, has opened its exhibition halls, galleries and other venues featuring fifteen different locations to showcase the best works from around the world.
The reasons for such a large number of exhibitions are many, and one of them is that as many as 400 authors entered the competition, presenting 7500 works in nine competition categories, leaving an unenviable task to the Festival Jury – the choice of the three finalists. Markita Franulić, president of the Jury, said that most of the works this year were from the following categories: Landscape, Architecture and Conceptual Art. However, the competition was fierce in other categories as well and the best works were chosen only after several evaluation stages.Festival Director Denis Redić pointed out that all nominated and rewarded pieces will become part of the Museum of Contemporary Art collection in Zagreb. He also drew attention to the significance and international dimension of the event visited by many renowned world artists and photography theoreticians from New York, London and Paris.
Along with numerous interesting exhibitions a very attractive exhibition by Josip Klarica, the winner of the Life Achievement Award, opened in the St. Thomas’s Church, where the authorpresented his life’s work with photos taken between 1976 and 2011. Equally exciting was an exhibition by one of the best contemporary Croatian photographers Ivan Posavac, who hadpresented his work at the Batana Gallery with the exhibition “Lice obasjano mjesečinom” (“AFace Lit By The Moonlight”).
International contemporary photography art could be seen and experienced at the exhibition “Sin_tesis” at the Heritage Museum where the best works of the four-year-long photography project “SI FEST” (the Savignano Immagini festival) were presented. The retrospective exhibition of the neorealist Mario Giacomelli opened there as well, demonstrating why Giacomelli is considered the “Fellini of photography”.
The Rovinj promenade hosted an open air exhibition “Prijatelji mora – velikani hrvatske fotografije 50-ih” (“Friends of the Sea – the Masters of Croatian Photography in the ‘50s”) again this year, featuring a wonderful selection of works by the greatest Croatian photographers from that period kept in national and private collections.
