1,700 participate in Popolane
Rovinj every year dedicates the last weekend of April to Popolana, a large sports and recreational, gastronomic and humanitarian event. This was the seventh edition of Popolana, organized by the Town of Rovinj, its Sports Association, Tourist Board and the company Maistra. The event’s slogan “Moving from the streets and squares to nature and tourism with sports” attracted many volunteers and friends who helped organize this three-day event. Popolana’s aim is to, besides promoting sports and a healthy lifestyle, enrich its tourist offer and acquaint the public with volunteer and humanitarian work.
An important part of Popolana is the humanitarian action “1+1=million steps“ which sells t-shirts with the Popolane emblem and other handicrafts made by the hard working hands of numerous Rovinj citizens who are raising money for those who need it the most.
The first day was marked by its youngest participants, children and students of Rovinj schools, who showed everything they know on the town’s Main Square. They were joined by the Rovinj Brass Band and Majorettes. The second and main day of the event was full of various sports competitions including sport and underwater fishing, bicycle tours, chess tournaments and recreational and professional dance group performances.
The last day was devoted to the traditional recreational five- kilometer run and the central event was the 9th half marathon of twenty one kilometers, where the best results were achieved by Elisha Save from Kenya. The first in the five-kilometer race was Christian Gallo from Rovinj. Running in the race beside people with disabilities was the marathon runner Mirjana Kmačić Pellizzer and her special guest – the blind Italian distance runner Tulio Frauo. All the athletes were also supported by a very special guest – Lisa Stublić, the top Croatian distance runner.
