Classical music lovers from Rovinj who had a special opportunity to enjoy two extraordinary pre-seasonal concert cycles must have awaited the beginning of this year’s summer concert season with a curious anticipation. The summer concert season has been organized for the 10th year in a row as part of the Rovinj Summer Festival. The concert performance by the Croatian Radio Television Symphony Orchestra given two nights ago, as part of the opening program of the 10th Anniversary Rovinj Summer Festival, met all expectations.

The Symphony Orchestra conducted by Christoph Campestrini gave a concert performance in the magnificent ambiance of the Church of St. Euphemia. This year’s repertoire included musical pieces by the following composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D Major KV 218), Gustav Mahler (selection from the cycle called Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen) and Ludwig van Beethoven (Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92).

Solo performances by violinist Daniel Froschauer and mezzosoprano Katja Markotić, the Festival Manager, enriched the first part of the concert. Froschauer gave a very nice performance of Mozart's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. The vocal capabilities of Katja Markotić could however not be revealed in their full beauty because of the sound discrepancy between the soloist and the orchestra. It was impossible to establish the necessary dialog between the singer and the orchestra.

The second part of the concert marked by Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 proceeded after a short break. The orchestra sounded unified and in harmony with the extraordinary musical capabilities of the instrumentalists. They created a suggestive sound image and a unique experience for the audience who enjoyed the performance of this grand musical piece in all its greatness.

Throughout the concert the orchestra was conducted by conductor Christoph Campestrini. On several occasions Campestrini experienced some difficulties in establishing contact with the orchestra because of his peculiar and very unusual style of conducting, to say the least. The concert ended with an additional performance of the famous Hungarian Dance No. 5 by Johannes Brahms.

Last year’s opening of the Rovinj Summer Festival that also took place in the extraordinary ambiance of the Church of St. Euphemia featured a concert performance by the Croatian Radio Television Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mladen Tarbuk, former Manager of the Croatian National Theater.
