The 20th Art Photography Showroom was opened in the Centre of Visual Arts Batana. This year’s theme of the international showroom, which is being held as part of the 16th Mundial Photo Festival, is named “Science in Space,” and, as the name says, the photographs on display are dedicated to its exploration.

At the 20th International Showroom, which is opened until August 28, there are 116 photographs of the Italian art photographer Gabriele Rigon and a part of the archives of the American space exploration agency NASA on display. The photographs show scenes of preparation and expedition of Esperia – of the European Space Agency (ESA), which took off from Cape Canaveral after long preparations in July of last year in the space shuttle “Discovery.”

The showroom audience in Rovinj got a unique opportunity at the opening of the exhibit “Science in Space.” They had the chance to meet Paolo Angelo Nespoli, the flight leader and an expert in electronics, along with the author of photographs Rigon. Nespoli did a short and complicated operation of installing an electronic knot on the international space station during the flight.

The author of the photographs Gabriele Rigon, who is a big space enthusiast, graduated from the airforce academy. Last year, the Italian army entrusted him with the making of the institutional calendar for 2008, seeing as he is an expert and a great art photographer. This enabled him to travel to the far away countries of the world. He travelled for more than 50,000 kilometres, photographed different areas from Kabul to Houston, did portraits of statesmen and during that made a cover story about NASA and the Esperia mission. Gabriele Rigon did his master’s of photography in Moscow, he is an author of several book covers and he wrote a book about photography called “Roxanne.” His work was exhibited at about one hundred showrooms around the world, and some of his work is exhibited in the prestigious photography galleries in Geneva, Amsterdam, Montreal, San Paolo, and now Rovinj. It is also interesting that the one hundred photographs from his space theme actually premiered at the Rovinj exhibit.

The International Showroom is organised under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Tourism of Croatia, the County of Istria, the City of Rovinj and the Tourist Association with the participation of the General Consul of the Republic of Italy, COMITES of Rijeka, the Italian Union, the National University of Trieste and the Italian Cultural Centre from Zagreb.
