Cultural and entertaining night that present the life of Rovinj's fishermen and their customs and skills with gastronomic offer and music programme

The way our ancestors lived, what they ate and what they listened to was shown to the numerous guests of Rovinj, who gathered on the centre public square, by the workers of the Tourist Association with the help of the members of the “Batana House” Association, who organised the second Night of Fisherman Tradition this year.

That tradition is something on which citizens of Rovinj can build their tourism future. That they are different and more interesting than other cities by the sea could be seen at every step. The camera flashes and camcorders were recording the fishermen who were preparing sardines for fun on their boats along the coast. Also recorded were “sea wolves” who were patching up and fixing nets, as well as skilled girls who were, with the so-called sea rope and catch weaving demijohns.

With the smell of fish, there was also specific music spreading along the square. With the doyenne of Croatian music, Mirko Cetinski, who was supported by the band Give Me Five, and the opera singer Oriana Vozila, on the smaller stage, located on the big embankment the performers were the group Batana and Sergio Preden Gato. Special praise goes to the Dalmatian group Kampanel who showed all the beauty and specificity of a cappella singing, while the “domestic” cultural art associations “Marco Garbin,” “Plesarin” and “Stjepan Žiža,” wearing the characteristic wear of the peninsula presented the folklore of this region.

The big news of this fisherman night was the three sales booths set in front of the eco museum “Batana House.” Besides brochures and prospects, there could be seen and bought some of the most beautiful books about the city history and fisherman tradition.

There were souvenirs offered such as printed t-shirts, replicas of small batanas, sails, sailors, sea knots, miniature weirs, by which Rovinj showed that it has and can offer an original souvenir to the guests of the St. Euphemia.

As was expected, the making of the fourth batana, called “Liliana,” brought the attention of onlookers. Its makers, Mladen Takač and Donald Ghira, said that there is still work to be done, but that its official launch will be organised on August 28, when the last Night of Fisherman Tradition as directed by the city Tourism Association will be held.
