Custodio Castelo&Cristina Maria touched hearts and souls of Rovinj’s audience
The third and also the final evening of the International Mediterranean Folk Music Festival Sete Sóis Sete Luas (Seven Suns Seven Moons) absolutely touched souls and hearts of Rovinj’s audience. Most credit for this goes to the performance of famous Portuguese fado performers Custodio Castelo&Cristina Maria, who transferred the famous melancholic notes with a lot of love, longing and nostalgia from their native Portugal to Rovinj. Exactly fado or destiny in translation is a musical genre that follows, lives and sings in Portugal and characterized by sad melodies and texts frequently written about the life of the poor and the sea. The audience fantastically reacted to fado song and music – a mixture of African slaves rhythms with traditional music of Portugal in which also Arabic influence can be heard, so it should not be surprising that also a great part of the audience arrived to Rovinj just wishing to see and hear Custodio Castelo, one of the greatest soloist of the worldwide reputation on Portuguese guitar and successor of the great Carlos Paredes. Namely, thanks to the new and original approach to Portuguese guitar Castelo’s talent was quickly noted, so he became a famous guest of the greatest Portuguese fado music performers such as Jorge Fernando, Camané, Maria Da Fé, Argentina Santos, Cristina Branco, Misia and Amália Rodrigues during her last European tour. With the album O descobrdor, for which he set to music the texts of the Dutch singer Jan Jacob Slauerhoff, Custodio Castelo won the platinum record in the Netherlands in 2001, as well as important awards in France.
The nostalgic performance was also followed by energetic, and even more than that, performance of the greatest and most popular Istrian band - Gustafi. As expected, their performance caused great ovations from the audience that literally did not want to let them leave the stage, which did not bother much the lead singer Edi Maružin and at the same time one of the festival’s organizers. Rovinj people and Gustafi love each other, and their performance in Saint Euphemia’s town is an event for itself. This time, old famous and popular songs of Istrian musical legends were supplemented by the new ones, which was a real musical delicacy for all Gustafi’s fans.
