The Evening of Fishing Tradition, an event which has won many awards and helped the locals promote their rich fishing tradition, way of life and customs, organized by the Tourist Board of the Town of Rovinj-Rovigno, was once again held in Rovinj

To promote the traditional values and customs of the region the Tourist Board of the Town of Rovinj-Rovigno organizes each year an “Fisherman’s Evening” which presents the customs and crafts of Rovinj fishermen, traditional Rovinj songs bitinadas, regional culinary heritage and a rich cultural and entertainment program, along with the launching of the traditional Rovinj boat, batana. The event, which won multiple awards, will be held on July 10th.

Over the years many Rovinj residents and visitors, of which there are 30,000 a day in the summer, had the opportunity to witness the construction and launching of batanas Fiamita, Calsanta, Arupina, Liliana, and the renovation and launching of batanas Adria, Camaiora, Leonberg, Antonietta, Santa Croce, Regina, Antea and Loreta. Batanas are owned by the members of the House of Batana Society and participate in the “Procession of Batanas with Dinner in a Spacio“, a typical Rovinj wine cellar. Besides learning about the traditional crafts of fishermen (repairing and making fish traps and nets, etc.) and customs from the last century, visitors can also visit the Batana Eco-Museum and enjoy delicious culinary treats at different event locations.

The Event will start at 7 p.m. with the Rovinj Brass Band Parade through the streets of Old Town, and at 8 p.m. a performance by the Cultural Society Marco Garbin will take place at the Rovinj waterfront. The traditional launching of batanas will be held at 8:30 p.m. at the Little Pier. The group Buđenje and the band Vindon Havin will perform at Maršal Tito Square at 9 p.m., while the Trio Music (K)nights and Sara Rener will perform at Riviera Square.

The event is organized by the Tourist Board of Rovinj-Rovigno and sponsored by Zagrebačka banka.

The Evening of Fishing Tradition

The Evening of Fishing Tradition, an event which has won many awards and helped the locals promote their rich fishing tradition, way of life and customs, organized by the Tourist Board of the Town of Rovinj-Rovigno, was once again held in Rovinj. During the event, the town experiences the old way of life – fishermen mend their nets on the waterfront stone benches, craftsmen weave wicker bottle holders, the aroma of grilled fish pervades the air and the sound of music from two stages spreads the good mood and the desire for songs and company.

The Evenings of Fishing Tradition are one of the most authentic moments and attractive events in Rovinj during summer. The streets, squares and the waterfront are full of curious visitors who never hesitate to ask the master shipwrights how a fishing boat is constructed, and often take the tools in their own hands to try out carpentry. This evening is also special because a new batana, the traditional fishing boat which used to feed the fishermen of Rovinj, is launched to the sound of traditional songs. Every year, for decades now, a few of these small boats are constructed and renovated over the summer at the small pier, thus ensuring this small wooden boat, the pride and symbol of Rovinj, doesn’t disappear from the town’s harbor, allowing more modern boats to take over. During the last Evening of Fishing Tradition the batana named Regina was launched, after which the party moved from the sea to land where excellent artists performed. The group Buđenje took one stage, followed by Vindov Havin, while the smaller and more intimate stage on the Rivijera Square was occupied by the local Trio Music (K)nights and Sara Renar. The Rovinj fishing festival was, as has become traditional, opened by the members of the Rovinj Brass Band, while the Culture Art Society Marko Garbin also held a concert. The hardworking hands of the House of Batana and Maistra’s employees took care of the culinary delights and pleasures.
