Fisherman's Evening
As usual, Fisherman's Evening, organized annually by the Tourist Board, was an event not to be missed. Its many culinary delights were accompanied by the characteristic Adriatic and Mediterranean music and demonstrations of, to some degree forgotten, crafts and skills such as wrapping demijohns in wicker and repairing fish traps and nets.
The central event of Fisherman's Evening, whose main aim is to promote the region’s traditional values and customs, was the launching of the batana “Leonberg”. The traditional boat was built in 1975 and was in need of restoration. After being restored on the Big Pier for several days it was finally launched under the eyes of numerous spectators. The “Marco Garbin” Cultural Society performed “Vieccia batana”, the unofficial hymn of Rovinj, to accompany the launch.
After the parade and performance of the Rovinj Brass Band, songs and dancing took place on two stages. The central stage was occupied long into the night by the vocal band “Kampanel” and the excellent Tedi Spalato, while the stage on the Rivijera Square was reserved for the folk group “Batana”, duo “On line” and the band “Polzer”. The special attraction was the video wall on the Town Square which showed clips of batanas being built in 1937 and 1963. The hardworking hands of Maistra cooks and the Batana Ecomuseum took care of the culinary delicacies.
Fisherman's Evening is being sponsored by the Town and is part of the international SeeNet project (a trans-local network for the cooperation between Italy and South-East Europe that seeks to strengthen the governance skills of involved territories and promote sustainable local development), together with the Town of Rovinj, Veneto, Toscana and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions, the towns of Pazin and Varaždin, and Brtonigla and Završje municipalities.
