7SÓIS.MED.KRIOL.ORKESTRA – NEW ARTISTIC CREATION WITH THE FESTIVAL’S SIGNATURE
The second evening of the Mediterranean Folk Music Festival Sete sóis Sete luas was marked by 7Sóis.Med.Kriol.Orkestra
It is a new musical creation with the festival’s signature made as the fruit of en excellent cooperation of six esteemed musicians coming from various parts of the Mediterranean and Macaronesia. That is how the sounds of Portugal, the Cape Verde Islands, Andalusia, Morocco, Apulia and Sicily meet and interweave that share the cultural and musical tradition and at the same time create original music as the evidence that understanding and cooperation in the times of a deep crisis of identity and Mediterranean chaos are possible. In addition, these two words, cooperation and understanding of different cultures, is the main motto of the three-day festival evenings. Exactly the example of 7Sóis.Med.Kriol.Orkestra. vividly shows that the music is the one that knows no borders as well as that exactly the diversities among nations are our common wealth that we need to inherit. Their program consisted of the performance of a whole series of traditional songs from the areas where the musicians come from, to which the audience reacted both with the voice and movement. The real musical delicacy for ethno lovers and guests of the central town square was brought by José Barros, unforgettable voice of a Portuguese group Navegante, Teté Alhinho, a composer and singer from the Cape Verde Islands, the Andalusian Manuel Cabrales on percussion, Jamal Ouassini from Morocco on violin, Mimmo Epifani from Apulia on mandolin and the Sicilian Mario Riveira on bass.
In the second part of the evening the international band was equally successfully replaced by a domestic ethno group Šćike, an Istrian group performances of which represent a mixture of folklore and modern musical expression. Playing on Istrian folk instruments attracted the audience’s attention, while the interpretations of traditional tunes veiled by modern sound stole attention and invited for a dance. Istrian musicians adjusted domestic and antique notes to a contemporary musical expression and showed the exceptional understanding and supplementing in the musical utterance of a small double bass (bajs), Istrian long flute – shawms (sopile), double whistle (volarice), diatonic accordion, bagpipe (mih), small fife (frulica) and shakers (šuškalica) with modern sounds of percussion, bass and electric guitar. The excellent performance of the members from Kršan’s and Pićan’s ethno band Šćike showed that Istria, in addition to the sun and sea, rich gastronomy and history, also presents exceptional cultural and musical attractions on its tourist menu.
