To promote the traditional values and customs of the region the Tourist Board of the Town of Rovinj-Rovigno organizes each year an “Fisherman’s Evening” which presents the customs and crafts of Rovinj fishermen, traditional Rovinj songs bitinadas, regional culinary heritage and a rich cultural and entertainment program, along with the launching of the traditional Rovinj boat, batana. The event, which won multiple awards, will be held on July 5th.

Over the years many Rovinj residents and visitors, of which there are 30,000 a day in the summer, had the opportunity to witness the construction and launching of batanas Fiamita, Calsanta, Arupina, Liliana, and the renovation and launching of batanas Adria, Camaiora, Leonberg, Antonietta, Santa Croce, Regina, Antea and Loreta. Batanas are owned by the members of the House of Batana Society and participate in the “Procession of Batanas with Dinner in a Spacio“, a typical Rovinj wine cellar. Besides learning about the traditional crafts of fishermen (repairing and making fish traps and nets, etc.) and customs from the last century, visitors can also visit the Batana Eco-Museum and enjoy delicious culinary treats at different event locations, provided by Maistra d.d. in cooperation with the Hotel Adriatic and the House of Batana Society.

The Event will start at 7 p.m. with the Rovinj Brass Band Parade through the streets of Old Town, and at 8 p.m. a performance by the Cultural Society Marco Garbin will take place at the Rovinj waterfront. The traditional launching of batanas will be held at 8:30 p.m. at the Little Pier. The vocal group Cambi from Kaštel Kambelovac and the band Neno Belan & Fiumensi will perform at Maršal Tito Square at 9 p.m. The folk group Batana and the band Music(K) Nights will perform at Riviera Square.

The event is organized by the Tourist Board of Rovinj-Rovigno and sponsored by the Town of Rovinj and Zagrebačka banka.

Opulent and Rich Evening of Fishing Traditions

The traditional Evening of Fishing Traditions, organized by the City Tourist Board, with the support of the Kuća o batani museum and the hotel and catering company Maistra, started by the promenade of the Rovinj Brass Orchestra along the streets of the old city.

The goal of this highly successful summertime event is to promote Rovinj fishermen’s customs and skills, such as mending and knitting nets, making fish-traps, demijohns, as well as the construction and launching of the fishing vessel batana, preparing gourmet specialties, but also performing traditional folklore, including bitinada songs. In a word, the goal is to present the destination’s traditional values and customs in a single place. All this, and even more, could be seen along the waterfront, and heard on two city open stages.

In addition to the Marco Garbin folk ensemble, which performed some of Rovinj’s most beautiful songs on the very waterfront as people strolled by, on the central stage, the a cappella group Cambi from Kaštel Kambelovac captured the attention and the hearts of the audience, followed by the exceptionally jovial Neno Belan & Fiumensi. The atmosphere on the Riviera square was also wonderful, which was, along with good mood, a contribution by the folk group Batana and the band Music(K)nights.

Beside the opportunity to learn about ancient skills and crafts pursued by the citizens of Rovinj, guests especially enjoyed the launching ceremony for the reconstructed batana boat named Antonieta, built back in 1954. Its launching from a small pier was accompanied by the singing of the members of the Marco Garbin folk ensemble, but also by the bursting of a champagne bottle against its flanks, wishing it quiet seas and many years of sailing. Numerous events taking place late into the night were also supplemented by a rich gastronomic offer.

The Evening of Fishing Traditions is one of the events which, once experienced, leave a deep memory of the destination visited. Among those who will from now on cherish Rovinj in their hearts, as they themselves told us, are the children from the village of Stršinci which was stricken by the recent floods – and 37 of them, who visited the Evening of Fishing Traditions, were also the special, and dearest, guests of the Rovinj Tourist Board.
